EAU award marks high quality urology research at Sechenov

EAU award marks high quality urology research at Sechenov While the annual European Association of Urology (EAU) Congress is going to take place in March, the Sechenov University researchers have already received their first EAU award this year. A surgery video made by the Sechenov scientists has been acknowledged by the EAU and will be shown and discussed at the congress. The author of the technique, Dmitry Enikeev, Deputy Director for Research at the Institute of Urology and Reproductive Health, has received a congratulation letter from the EAU organising committee.

Video presentations are one the most important events at the EAU Congress. Annually, thousands of videos are submitted, and only around a hundred of them are included into the programme to compete for the award. To win this competition and make it to the top three means to present the technique to the whole world.

Russian urologists submitted a video on modernised en bloc resection. Up until now, tumors larger than 3 cm have been considered challenging to remove quickly and efficiently as a single tissue mass due to narrow instruments for extraction. In cases such as this, another approach had to be employed - to cut the lesion layer by layer with an electric loop, which takes more time and is associated with greater risks of complications.

The Sechenov urologists used a method traditionally reserved for benign prostatic hyperplasia. The separated large tumor was fragmented and evacuated with a special instrument called morcellator. The second stage involved removal of the tumor base for subsequent histological evaluation and staging.

The congress is going to be held in Amsterdam at the end of March and attract about 15,000 participants from 100 countries. Over the course of 5 days urologists and other healthcare professionals are going to take part in research sessions, live surgery discussions and training programmes.
