© 2020 The development of critical thinking is a fundamental task of the modern education system. However, practically, it turns out that a number of teachers are not competent enough in this area. The purpose of the study is to identify the most universal and valid methods for the dynamic assessment of the level of critical thinking in children. There are also difficulties associated with the assessment of the level of critical thinking, the selection of valid methods for its study, especially when it comes to preschool or primary school children. The participants (186 children 6–8 years ages from 3 schools of Moscow (Russian Federation) in the group of gifted children did not fall into the groups with a low development of critical thinking, and the participants in the control group did not fall into the group with the highest or the highest level of development of critical thinking. In two tests, the data for the gifted and control groups showed high correlation values between the definition of giftedness and the level of critical thinking development (0.958 and 0.962 in the static test and 0.659 and 0.908 in the dynamic test, respectively). Therefore, it is relevant to select valid methods that would allow the assessment of critical thinking as one of the criteria for the giftedness of a child in dynamics, that is, in the process of developmental learning. During the research such methods were used – sculpture method, absurdity method, verbal fantasy method, drawing method, think of a game method. The research results have shown that giftedness has a psychophysiological basis, the described test methods are valid and can be used for the assessment of the level of critical thinking and the quality of the educational process.

© 2019 Elsevier Ltd Background: Single studies suggest that nursing students perceive caring as more an instrumental than expressive behaviour and indicate some differences between caring perceptions in junior and senior nursing students. However, there are limited studies investigating caring perceptions in nursing students across multiple cultures. Objective: To determine perceptions of caring in Slovene, Croatian, Chinese and Russian nursing students and explore whether there are statistically significant differences in perceptions of caring between countries and between first and third-year nursing students. Design: A cross-sectional descriptive study design was used. Settings and participants: The study included 604 nursing students enrolled in first and third year in seven different nursing faculties in four countries: Slovenia; China; Croatia; and the Russian Federation. Methods: The 25-item Caring Dimension Inventory (CDI-25) was used to measure caring perceptions. We also included demographic questions regarding age, gender, country, year of study and type of study. Demographic data were analysed using descriptive analysis while a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) adjusted for unequal sample sizes was performed together with a post hoc analysis of the results. Results: The results of two-way ANOVA showed that both main effects (country and year of study) were statistically significant, as well as their interaction at the 0.05 significance level. The main effect for country was F(3, 596) = 3.591, p < 0.0136 indicating a significant difference in CDI-25 between Slovenia (M = 108.9, SD = 9.2), Russian Federation (M = 107.1, SD = 8.2), China (M = 102.8, SD = 9.7) and Croatia (M = 110.0, SD = 8.6). Conclusions: Perceptions of caring in nursing students differ across countries, probably due to different educational systems, curricula, cultural differences and societal values. Implementing caring theories in nursing curricula could help students to cultivate caring during their education.

© IV Karpenko et al. A modern military physician can perform their duties at a high professional level only when they are au fait with a complex of military medical disciplines, such as military field surgery, military hygiene, organisation and tactics of medical service and some others, along with general medical knowledge. Back in his time, our great fellow countryman N.I. Pirogov described war as a “traumatic epidemic”. Hence the importance of knowledge of military field surgery for a military physician, which is difficult to overestimate. This article presents the historical picture of the introduction of issues of military field surgery, first in hospital schools, then at the Saint Petersburg Medical and Surgical Academy (MSA), and then, during Soviet times, at the S.M. Kirov Military Medical Academy (the Military Medical Academy of the Workers’ and Peasants’ of the Red Army). It is shown that particular issues of military surgery were sporadically taught in hospital schools since the 18th century. Usually, it would happen on the brink of or during military conflicts, and the students attending would be graduates of hospital schools going to the front. First, particular issues of military surgery can be found in the programme of the Department of Theoretical Surgery of the Saint Petersburg MSA introduced by Professor P.A. Dubovitsky in 1844. The next stage was the establishment in the academy in 1869 of the first independent course of military field surgery which was addressed to military physicians who were annually seconded to the academy for improvement in military field surgery. Since 1879, this course was also studied by students of the Saint Petersburg MSA. The opening in the Academy in 1936 of the first independent Department of Military Field Surgery in the USSR, headed by the well-known scientist and surgeon V.A. Oppel, can be considered the completion of the development of the teaching of this academic discipline.

© Nikolay N. Krylov, Aftandil V. Alekberzade, Elena A. Piatenko. The eponym is a part of the nomenclature of medicine. In 1848, R. Virchow described the enlarged left supraclavicular lymph node (Virchow's node), which he uncovered by physical examination. He believed that such lymphadenopathy occurs in cases of stomach cancer (less often – with lung cancer), when the metastatic process spreads up the thoracic duct to the left supraclavicular fossa. He described the pathogenesis of this trait and proved its malignant nature. Russian authors, apparently, borrowed this eponym from German textbooks on medicine. In 1886, Troisier added to Virchow’s insights and presented a detailed substantiation for the increase in the size of the left supraclavicular lymph node. Troisier described its typical location above the middle third of the clavicle behind the clavicular portion of the sternocleidomastoid muscle. He considered this enlargement as a direct sign of the existence of a neoplasm in the abdominal cavity or in the pelvic cavity, breast cancer, tuberculosis, and syphilis. In his opinion, identifying a diseased lymph node by physical examination does not indicate the exact location of the primary focus of the tumor, but will direct the diagnostic search in the right direction. Palpable lymph nodes in the supraclavicular fossa (Troisier-Virchow), as a rule, indicate a malignant nature. If the lymph node enlargement is due to tumor emboli in cases of stomach cancer, it should be referred to as Virchow’s metastasis. Troisier’s symptom can be detected due to the metastasizing of cancer of other abdominal organs and the small pelvis, lung, breast, esophagus and tuberculosis lesions.

© 2018 Academic Research Publishing Group. The use of new information technologies in the educational process intensifies the need for analyzing the existing resources suitable for teaching students in conformity with professional standards. The objective of this study is to consider the significance of survey services in teaching students market research, to analyze the efficiency of survey services, to prove their positive impact on the learning process and to determine requirements for educational survey services. The materials of the study were students' reports on conducting consumer surveys using either paper or online questionnaires. The research is based on a pedagogical experiment to analyze the applicability of Internet resources in the educational process. The results of students' research were processed through the comparison of the data obtained. The authors of the article have developed the life cycle of educational survey services. Based on stages of the life cycle, the authors have determined desired functional characteristics of free survey services, which will simplify the task of selecting a suitable educational tool. It has been confirmed that the exclusive use of Internet technologies in teaching students market research cannot be sufficient, and they should be used in combination with basic approaches to a marketing theory. The conducted pedagogical experiment has proved the consistency of Internet technologies as an educational tool. The authors of the article have revealed that despite undeniable advantages of online survey services they also have significant shortcomings, which makes it impossible to completely replace classic methods of collecting market information from this moment on. The introduction of free survey services into the educational process increases teaching efficiency and develops professional competencies within the existing standards. Defining functional requirements of the above-mentioned life cycle, teachers can choose the best educational survey service taking into account the stages students will go through while using it. An extensive use of information technologies is essential to the formation of new teaching materials and the renewal of the existing ones based on the synthesis of the classical theory of marketing and innovations.

The key element of the new form of the higher education process is the self-guided unsupervised work of the students. Motivation is needed to promote the involvement of the students in the educational process which implies the necessity of the goal-oriented initiative for the acquisition of professional knowledge and practical experience in the field of forensic medicine. To achieve this goal, the Department of Forensic Medicine of I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University places special emphasis on the experience with carrying out student competitions. Each such competition consists of several contests focused on the solution of a specific problem, e.g. the inspection of the place of occurrence under investigation with a gunshot or punctured-and-incised wound, forensic medical autopsy, problem studies, and intelligence tests. All the contests and problem studies are held in the form of an interactive game. The experience gained in the course of the student competitions gives practical evidence that the interdepartmental intelligence contests contribute to raising the interest of students in forensic medicine. The open competition provides a highly efficient tool for the popularization of scientific knowledge and the promotion of interest in the participation in the forensic medical research activities. Moreover, the student competitions facilitate formation of the earlier professional skills indispensable for team working and the development of abilities for making decisions under the extreme conditions. In addition, the contests teach the participants the art of public appearance. They improve the quality of vocational training in forensic medicine and help to establish the first professional contacts at the interinstitutional (including international) level.

© 2018 Informing Science Institute. All rights reserved. Aim/Purpose The present quantitative, cross-sectional study aimed to investigate objective and subjective factors in the self-determination of doctoral students in their educational activities. Objective determinants included major discipline and forms of academic and scholarly activity (that is, attending classes and writing papers), and subjective determinants included personal characteristics of the doctoral students, including dispositional autonomy and perceptions of environmental supports for students' basic psychological needs. Background The quality of students' motivation for learning has been linked with many different outcomes. Specifically, students who are more internally motivated (that is, who engage in learning activities for reasons that are personally important and freely chosen) demonstrate better performance outcomes and are more likely to choose and to persist in challenging tasks, to enjoy learning, to exhibit greater creativity, and in general to experience greater psychological well-being. Important questions remain, however, regarding the sources that affect student motivation, in particular at the level of graduate school. The present study expands on existing research by exploring contributions to students' motivation both from the students, themselves, and from supports stemming from two interpersonal contexts: close relationships and the university environment. Methodology Participating in the study were 112 doctoral students from various natural sci-ences departments of a major university in the Volga region of Russia. Self-report measures included dispositional autonomy, motivation for various types of academic and scholarly activity, and satisfaction of basic needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness in various interpersonal contexts. Analyses includ-ed descriptive statistics, comparison of mean differences, correlation, and struc-tural equation modeling. Contribution The present study goes beyond existing research by considering both disposi-tional and situational factors that influence the motivation of doctoral students for their scholarly and academic activities, and by comparing the impact on mo-tivation of close personal relationships with that of various interpersonal con-texts in the university setting. Findings Doctoral students reported greater supports for their basic needs (for compe-tence, autonomy, and relatedness) from their close personal relationships than in their university contexts. Students felt less support for their autonomy and competence with their research supervisor than in other university settings. The early stages of a scholarly activity, such as gathering sources and analyzing mate-rials, were more likely to be characterized by external motivation, whereas the later stages, like the actual writing of a manuscript, were more likely to be inter-nally motivated. When competing for variance, need supports from university-based but not from close personal relationships were significant contributors to students internal motivation for scholarly and academic activity; this effect, however, was fully mediated through students own dispositional autonomy. Recommendations for Practitioners The present study underscores the importance of creating an environment in the university that supports doctoral students needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Educators, and in particular research supervisors, should attend to the ways in which their policies and practices support versus undermine these needs, which are shown to play an important role in promoting doctoral stu-dents own internal motivation for their scholarly and academic activities. Recommendations for Researchers Although in this sample need supports from university-based interpersonal con-texts outweighed the role of need supports from close personal relationships, in terms of doctoral students scholarly and academic motivation, it seems im-portant to keep both contexts in mind, given the general importance of close relationships for motivation and other educational and well-being outcomes. As well, accounting for students own dispositional attributes, such as their own personal tendency toward autonomy, seems a critical counterpoint to looking at environmental contributions. Future Research Future research should examine whether the mediational model tested in the present study applies to other samples of doctoral students, for example, to those from other disciplines, such as the humanities, and those in other cultural or geographic locations, where it is possible that close personal relationships may contribute more substantially to students motivation than was the case in the present sample. As well, future studies would do well to include other rele-vant outcomes, such as academic grades, successful degree completion, and measures of well-being, in order to confirm previous findings of the link be-tween internal motivation and various educational outcomes.

Objective: The problem of devising an education quality assessment system at a medical higher educational institution has been analyzed in the article. The authors compare the views on the interpretation of the concept of “quality of education”, as well as examine the principles and criteria for the quality of education. A new approach to the internal system for assessing the quality of education at a medical higher education is offered in the article on the basis of the integration of all the components of the pedagogical system. The following components of the internal system of education quality assessment are considered: the conceptual component (forecasting, planning the strategic areas of the educational process development to achieve the quality of education, the mission and objectives), the procedural content component (monitoring at the initial and final stages of the education quality assessment), the self-analysis component (the analysis of students, teachers, department chairs’ activity); the analytical component (visualization of information obtained on the basis of transparency, informational openness of learning and upbringing results, the analysis and elimination of identified shortcomings, the introduction of advanced pedagogical experience into the educational process). Method: The study was conducted at the FSAEI HE I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University of the Ministry of Healthcare of the Russian Federation (Sechenov University) in the period from February 2011 to March 2017. The sample group size was determined with the use of a special formula. Based on the sample size, 450 respondents were included in the study, and the number of people who would drop out was determined in the sample (n = 429), so the sample was representative in terms of quality and quantity. The students from 1 to 6 years were involved in the study in five training programs of the university who were randomly selected. An original questionnaire was devised. The questionnaire contained some standard questions and special questions on the research topic. Results: The main contingent of students is satisfied with the quality of education at Sechenov University and the level assessment of the quality of education is higher in comparison to other universities, but among the final-year students the assessment of the quality of education compared with other universities does not differ significantly. To attract applicants to FSAEI HE I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University the significant factors were: preserving a good reputation of the university (64.7%), prestige (53%) and the quality of education (50.7%). The most popular competencies among students of all the faculties and courses were the following: willingness to work with modern medical equipment (45% ± 2,3%), knowledge of innovative medical technologies (31,9% ± 2,2%). Almost every second student (55% ± 2.3%) believes that the quality of education at Sechenov University corresponds to the requirements of the current labor market. Conclusion: The conclusion has been drawn on the basis of the conducted research, that the internal system of assessing the quality of education is directed to increasing prestige of Russian higher medical education, its integration into the international educational space.

Different educational programs for the rapid recognition of stroke symptoms can be aimed at educating children and adolescents. Objective - to investigate the results of STOP-STROKE lessons at Moscow schools. Subject and methods. The Youth Council, Moscow Healthcare Department (MHD), in collaboration with the ORBI foundation gave open STOP-STROKE lessons among the pupils of Moscow schools. The investigation included the results of educating 29,653 4-10-form pupils who completed a specially designed questionnaire before and after the lecture that explained the main symptoms of stroke, as well as the actions to be taken when the latter was suspected. The lecture included the mnemonic test UDAR (blow) (U for smile, D for movement, A for aphasia, D for decision). Results. It was found that after education, there was better knowledge about stroke symptoms (aphasia, facial muscle weakness, and limb weakness) and actions to be taken when stroke was suspected. There was a significant increase in the number of children who correctly identified the three symptoms of the disease. Conclusion. The investigation demonstrated the effectiveness of the program. After being educated, the children can more quickly call for an ambulance if stroke occurs in a family member. Further investigations are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of these lectures, including in the long-term.
