Sechenov University in Times Higher Education Rankings

The 2022 edition of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings was published on 2 September. This time, Sechenov University has been ranked 19th among 60 universities from Russia and currently occupies positions 1001–1200 worldwide. Sechenov University continues to be Russia’s best medical school, according to the World University Rankings 2022.

The current version of the rankings has been largely influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. Universities that have been actively involved in the coronavirus research show better results this year. Thanks to this, Sechenov University has demonstrated a dramatic rise in citations, scoring 28.9 points compared to 8.5 last year.

Sechenov University’s other activities have also seen a better recognition. The international outlook has scored 49.6 points vs. 42.1 last year, while the research has received 13.6 points compared to 11.5 in the previous rankings.

The number of international students has increased from 18 to 21%. While the overall number of full-time students exceeds 16,000, Sechenov University continues to demonstrate its commitment to providing equal opportunities, with the female-to-male student ratio of 69:31.

Times Higher Education World University Rankings are published annually by the Times Higher Education magazine. These rankings are considered very influential and regularly appear in major governmental and international programmes as highlights of the progress in the academic world.

This year, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings include 1,662 universities from 99 countries and territories. In addition, 452 other universities submitted their data but could not meet the eligibility criteria to be listed in the rankings.

The United States remains the most represented country with 183 entries on the list, while 6 countries have debuted this year: Azerbaijan, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Fiji, Palestine, and Tanzania.

The standing of academic institutions is based on 13 indicators which reflect the performance in 4 areas — teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.
