Supervisory Board approves Sechenov University’s development strategy

On 26 January 2022, Mayor of Moscow Sergei Sobyanin presided at the joint meeting (conducted via videolink) of Sechenov University’s Supervisory Board and Board of Trustees. At this event, the Strategy of the Scientific and Technological Development of Sechenov University Until 2030 was approved.

First of all, Sergei Sobyanin thanked Sechenov University’s staff for their contribution in the fight against COVID-19 and noted the leading role of the University compared to other federal medical organisations.

The Mayor of Moscow said that in the next decade Sechenov University should become a world-class educational and scientific centre. “There are priority areas of research where Sechenov University is going to achieve breakthrough results. First of all, it is the development and implementation of a new paradigm of health management, from advanced diagnostics to effective personalised treatment, as well as the creation of a full ecosystem for the development of original medical technologies and medicines,” said Sergei Sobyanin.

Petr Glybochko, Rector of Sechenov University, thanked the Mayor of Moscow for appreciating the work of the University’s staff during the pandemic and said that over 1,000 students volunteered in COVID hospitals.

“Currently, they have around 500 students and residents. All of them received special training which allows to work with COVID patients, as well as EMIAS training (United Medical Information and Analytical System of Moscow). Now they can work independently,” said Petr Glybochko.

The Rector presented the Strategy of the Scientific and Technological Development of Sechenov University Until 2030. In his speech, Petr Glybochko outlined the mission of the leading medical university — to ensure the global competitiveness of Russian education, fundamental and applied research, and the development in the field of biomedicine. According to the Rector, the University will focus on a number of key strategic projects, including biodesign, translational research in medicine and pharmaceuticals, and creation of a network for the development of best practices in medicine, science, and education — integrating regional scientific, educational, and medical organisations into a system of clinical and fundamental research in the field of life sciences.

“In the near future, Sechenov University will be actively developing large centres — the Biomedical Science and Technology Park, Institute of Translational Medicine, and Institute of Pharmacy. Today — more than ever — new opportunities are obvious… opportunities to create an intersectoral cluster for biopharmaceuticals and medical technologies, which could become Russia’s largest hub in the field of pharmaceuticals,” said Petr Glybochko.

Sergei Sobyanin highly appreciated the development of research and clinical facilities at Sechenov University, the potential of the staff, and the determination of the students.

“Sechenov University is the leading partner of the Government of Moscow in medical training and in research for the healthcare system of the city. We are committed to providing maximum support for the implementation of Sechenov University’s development strategy,” said Sergei Sobyanin.

Roman Aliyev, Sechenov University’s Vice-Rector for Economics and Finance, presented the 2021 financial report and shared the plans for 2022.
