Sechenov University in Three University Missions Ranking

We are pleased to announce that the most recent edition of the Three University Missions Moscow International University Ranking (MosIUR) was published a few days ago. According to the final list, Sechenov University occupies position 301–350 worldwide, seeing a major improvement compared to the 2020 results.

This year, MosIUR includes a record-high number of entries — 1,650 universities from 97 countries and territories, making this ranking the most representative among all similar lists. There were 1,500 entries in 2020.

Russia is the third most represented country with 112 universities, behind the United States (239 universities) and China (144 universities).

The Three University Missions Ranking has listed educational organisations from 39 subjects of the Russian Federation. Moscow has 33 entries, St Petersburg — 11, Tomsk Oblast — 5, Republic of Tatarstan — 5, Samara Oblast — 4.

According to this year’s ranking, 3 universities from Russia are in the TOP-100: Lomonosov Moscow State University (19th place), St Petersburg State University (36th place), and MIPT (44th place).

From the detailed analysis of the results, the authors make an important conclusion that the number of foreign students studying at Russia’s leading universities has increased considerably — this percentage is currently higher than the world average.

Online education has also allowed many Russian entries to improve their positions. With the rapid development of online courses, the results of Russian universities are 43% higher than the world average. Russia has overtaken the UK, Canada, and France in the relative number of online courses available on major web platforms; only China and the United States are ahead.

The Three University Missions Moscow International University Ranking (MosIUR) was launched by the Russian Union of Rectors, while the Russian Association of Rating Makers operates the system. The newly developed ranking procedure was needed to meet the strict criteria of Russia’s State Programme ‘Scientific and Technological Development of the Russian Federation’.

The MosIUR global ranking takes into account three different missions of universities — education (45%), research (25%), and community involvement (30%). This approach is based only on measurable indicators, thus excluding the subjectivity which may arise from reputation surveys. MosIUR has been published annually since 2017.
