Knowledge Day: start of new academic year

Knowledge Day, which falls on 1 September, is a nationwide day of the start of the school year — and it is especially important for those who only begin their studies at the university. This year, the newly enrolled students of Sechenov University have attended an online ceremony, where they were addressed by Mikhail Murashko, Minister of Health of the Russian Federation, and Petr Glybochko, Rector of Sechenov University.

In his speech, Mikhail Murashko noted that Russia’s healthcare system needs to attract young and enthusiastic doctors with in-depth competencies — and who are dedicated to their work.

‘The coronavirus pandemic has shown that medical professions are the most needed professions in the world. Doctors are valued by society and enjoy universal respect. They are the first people to go for help, they are trusted. This is not only a reward for selfless work but also a huge responsibility. I would like to express my gratitude to the teachers at Sechenov University for the training of highly qualified specialists for our medicine. I wish you great professional success and continuous progress for the benefit of Russia’s healthcare, medical science — and our patients’, said Mikhail Murashko.

In his address to the new students, Petr Glybochko, Rector of Sechenov University, especially emphasised the heritage of Sechenov University — where numerous outstanding doctors studied and worked, including Anton Chekhov, Sergey Botkin, Nikolai Semashko, Nil Filatov, Ivan Sechenov, and Nikolay Pirogov.

‘You will be lectured by professors, academicians, Nobel Prize laureates. Starting on 1 September, you will be able to use our Institute of Electronic Education, scientific libraries, laboratories, and clinical departments. In addition to studying, you will have multiple options to enjoy a bright and interesting student life. You can use our Cultural Centre, do sports at the Burevestnik stadium, and relax at the Sechenovets student camp on the Black Sea coast. I wish you good health — and patience in comprehending our noble profession that everyone needs today. Good luck, dear friends!’ said Petr Glybochko.
