The local crystal/magnetic structures of the SrFe12−xInxO19 solid solutions (x = 0.1; 0.3; 0.6 and 1.2) were investigated using neutron powder diffraction. The measurements of the electric polarization for all investigated samples were carried out as a function of the external electric field. The presence of the ferroelectric and ferromagnetic ordering (dual ferroic ordering) in the SrFe12−xInxO19 hexaferrites at 300 K was found. This appearance contradicts to the conventional opinion describing their crystal structure (centrosymmetric space group P63/mmc (No. 194)). The reason for the existence of a spontaneous polarization (nonzero dipole moment) in the SrFe12−xInxO19 hexaferrites continues controversial. The crystal structure of the hexaferrites was considered both the centrosymmetric P63/mmc and non-centrosymmetric P63mc space groups. This fact made it possible to find a connection between the emerging dipole moment and not equal distortions of the neighbor oxygen polyhedral. The nature description of the nonzero dipole moment formation in a quasi-centrosymmetrical system of the In-substituted SrFe12−xInxO19 hexaferrites was presented based on the neutron diffraction data.

© 2021 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are heterogeneous carbon-based compounds that can seriously affect human health. The aim of this study was to measure serum concentrations of POPs in women residing in the Euro-Arctic Region of Russia. A total of 204 women from seven rural settlements of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug (NAO) took part in the study. We measured serum concentrations of 11 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and 17 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) across the study sites and among Nenets and non-Nenets residents. Measurement of POPs was performed using an Agilent 7890A gas chromatograph equipped with an Agilent 7000 series MS/MS triple quadrupole system. The concentrations of all POPs were low and similar to findings from other Arctic countries. However, significant geographic differences between the settlements were observed with exceptionally high concentrations of PCBs in Varnek located on Vaygach Island. Both ΣDDT (p = 0.011) and ΣPCB (p = 0.038) concentrations were significantly lower in Nenets. Our main findings suggest that the serum concentrations of the legacy POPs in women in the Euro-Arctic Region of Russia are low and similar to those in other Arctic countries. Significant variations between settlements, and between Nenets and non-Nenets residents, were found. Arctic biomonitoring research in Russia should include studies on the associations between nutrition and concentrations of POPs.

© 2017 EDIZIONIMINERVAMEDICA. BACKGROUND: Goals of vestibular schwannoma (VS) microsurgery are maximal resection, facial nerve (FN) preservation and in selected cases, hearing preservation (HP). Postoperative HP rates are related to clinical and radiographic factors: Size of tumor, preoperative hearing, hypertension, diabetes, and presence or absence of preoperative tinnitus. In this retrospective review we evaluated the influence of preoperative tinnitus on HP after VS surgery in patients with preoperative socially useful hearing (SUH). METHODS: Twenty-five patients with SUH underwent VS micro neurosurgery by retrosigmoid (RS) approach. Selection criteria were pure tone audiogram ≤50dB loss and speech discrimination score >50% (50/50 criterion, AAO-HNS class A-B). In relation to maximum diameter, we identified two size-groups: 1) group A ≤2cm (13 cases); 2) group B >2cm (12 cases). HP attempt was assisted by intraoperative ABR evoked by LS CE-Chirp® (Interacustics, Middelfart, Denmark) acoustic stimuli. RESULTS: Mean age was 44.3 years (20-64); average maximum diameter 2,0cm (0,8-4). Preoperative tinnitus was present in 10 patients (40%): All of them had a Class B-hearing. Total and nearly-total (>95%) resection was possible in all. Mortality and major morbidity were zero. In all, facial nerve (FN) was anatomically and functionally preserved; in 10 an incomplete FN deficit was followed by complete recovery within 2-8 weeks. At a follow-up ranging from 8 to 17 months (average 12.7 months), socially useful hearing (SUH) preservation rate was 52%, with significant differences in relation to size: 61.5% group A and 41.7% group B (P=0.014). Postoperative AAO-HNS C (serviceable) hearing was observed in 36%, deafness in 12%. At last follow-up, among the 10 patients with preoperative tinnitus 6 worsened from Class-B to Class-C, 3 remained in Class-B, and one was deaf. As regards SUH preservation, 3 of 10 patients with preoperative tinnitus and 10 of 15 without it remained in Class-A-B (P=0.006). CONCLUSIONS: Microsurgery represents the first therapeutic option for small growing VS with SUH. Our data confirm that key-hole RS rea moval of VS with intraoperative LS-CE-Chirp ABR monitoring allows good rate of SUH preservation, especially maximum diameter does not exceed 2cm. Preoperative tinnitus seems to indicate a lower hearing reserve and predicts a lower likelihood of HP.

© 2021, The Author(s). Background: The morphometric analysis of the individual bones of the human skeleton can be used to estimate the sex of unidentified corpses. Our aims were as follows: to test whether thyroid cartilage can be used for forensic purposes as a predictor of biological sex; to establish the level of sexual dimorphism of the thyroid cartilage in a sample of adult subjects from a population of European Russia; and to test the accuracy of the morphometric parameters obtained from the thyroid cartilage. Results: The thyroid cartilage from 100 adults of known age (50 males and 50 females) was obtained during forensic examination; morphometric tests were conducted using Vernier Digital ROKTOOLS ABS DIN 862 0-200/6 inch with measurement accuracy ± 0.01 mm. The measured parameters were N = 31 for each subject. Intra- and inter-observer reproducibility was tested. Multivariate statistical analysis was applied to the measurements. To check the data set for normal distribution, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used. Finally, to estimate the sex of the observed individuals, a stepwise discriminant analysis was conducted, using the Wilks’ lambda selection method. The most significant parameters were the outer distance between bases of inferior horn; the inner distance between distal ends of inferior horns; distance between distal ends of left superior and inferior horns; left superior horn length (distance between left superior horn distal end and base); distance between superior and inferior notches; thyroid angle; left lamina height (vertical line along left lamina middle); horizontal distance between anterior intermedium line and the right lamina posterior edge; distance between inferior thyroid notch and line connecting left and right thyroid laminae; and left superior horn thickness at mid-line. The stepwise discriminant analysis resulted in an equation with ten parameters. Conclusions: The results of the current study indicated that in the European Russian population, the equation obtained in the stepwise discriminant analysis makes it possible to predict sex with a probability of 100% on the validation set. On the test set, the resultant accuracy was 100% for females and 100% for males. Our findings confirm the scientific evidence that the thyroid cartilage has a pronounced sexual dimorphism.

© 2021, The Author(s). Background: With an increasing aging population and a lower ratio between the active and the dependent population, population aging is considered a global social and health challenge, associated with increased demand in health care needs and social pension. This study projects the Greek and Cypriot population to guide future planning of social and health policies and services. Methods: The total population by sex and age groups, Total Fertility Rate (TFR), life-expectancies at birth and Potential Support Ratio PSR (persons aged 20–64 years per person 65+ years) are projected probabilistically by the year 2100 using Bayesian hierarchical models and United Nations’ population data for Greece and Cyprus from the period of 1950 to 2015. Results: The TFR is projected to be around 1.5 children per woman in 2050 and around 1.75 in 2100 for both countries, with all values of prediction intervals being around or below the Replacement level fertility. PSR is expected to decrease remarkably and be 2.5 in 2050 and 1.6 in 2100 for Cyprus while for Greece it will be around 1.5 for both years 2050 and 2100. Life-expectancy is expected to increase to 84 years for men and 87 years for women in 2050 and 90 years for men and 94 years for women in 2100 for both countries. The share of the population aged 65 years and over is projected to increase in both countries and be the one third of the population by 2100. Conclusions: Greece and Cyprus will acquire the characteristics of an aging population, putting a significance pressure on the social and health systems of both countries. Both countries should reform their social and health policy agenda to confront population aging and its consequence. They should adopt fertility incentives and family policies to increase fertility and migrants’ inclusiveness policies to improve the demographic structure and the economic activity. The national health systems should promote prevention strategies at the primary health sector and promote healthy aging while health research policy should aim to promote research in innovative technologies and digital health to create assistive technology for self-care and greater independence of older people.

Over recent years, mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) and their potential biomedical applications have received much attention from the global scientific community in an increasing manner. Firstly, MSCs were successfully isolated from human bone marrow (BM), but in the next steps, they were also extracted from other sources, mostly from the umbilical cord (UC) and adipose tissue (AT). The International Society for Cellular Therapy (ISCT) has suggested minimum criteria to identify and characterize MSCs as follows: plastic adherence, surface expression of CD73, D90, CD105 in the lack of expression of CD14, CD34, CD45, and human leucocyte antigen-DR (HLA-DR), and also the capability to differentiate to multiple cell types including adipocyte, chondrocyte, or osteoblast in vitro depends on culture conditions. However, these distinct properties, including self-renewability, multipotency, and easy accessibility are just one side of the coin; another side is their huge secretome which is comprised of hundreds of mediators, cytokines, and signaling molecules and can effectively modulate the inflammatory responses and control the infiltration process that finally leads to a regulated tissue repair/healing or regeneration process. MSC-mediated immunomodulation is a direct result of a harmonic synergy of MSC-released signaling molecules (i.e., mediators, cytokines, and chemokines), the reaction of immune cells and other target cells to those molecules, and also feedback in the MSC-molecule-target cell axis. These features make MSCs a respectable and eligible therapeutic candidate to be evaluated in immune-mediated disorders, such as graft versus host diseases (GVHD), multiple sclerosis (MS), Crohn’s disease (CD), and osteoarthritis (OA), and even in immune-dysregulating infectious diseases such as the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This paper discussed the therapeutic applications of MSC secretome and its biomedical aspects related to immune-mediated conditions. Sources for MSC extraction, their migration and homing properties, therapeutic molecules released by MSCs, and the pathways and molecular mechanisms possibly involved in the exceptional immunoregulatory competence of MSCs were discussed. Besides, the novel discoveries and recent findings on immunomodulatory plasticity of MSCs, clinical applications, and the methods required for their use as an effective therapeutic option in patients with immune-mediated/immune-dysregulating diseases were highlighted.

Purpose: To assess the clinical and radiographic success rate of microsurgical endodontic treatment of upper molar teeth in relationship with the maxillary sinus, with 12 months follow-up. Methods: Patients treated with microsurgical endodontic treatment of upper molar teeth in the period between 2017 and 2019 were recruited from two dental clinics according to specific selection criteria. The outcomes were determined based on clinical and radiographic results taken three, six and 12 months post-operatively, compared with those taken immediately before and after surgery. Clinical and radiographic outcomes were recorded. The distance between the most apical part of the root and of the lesion to the maxillary sinus was measured on CBCT images before the surgery. Patient-related outcomes were recorded. Results: Out of 35 patients evaluated, 21 were selected according with the selection criteria for a total of 27 roots and 29 canals treated. After 12 months, 18 patients showed a complete healing whereas three demonstrated incomplete healing. Consequently, the success rate in this study was 85.7% after one year. In 28.5% (6 patients) there was a perforation of the Schneiderian membrane that didn’t seem to affect the outcome. All patients kept the molar one year later. The pain level decreased significantly over the time during the first week after surgery. Conclusion: Microsurgical Endodontic treatment of the upper molar teeth should be considered a valid and predictable treatment option even in case of Schneiderian membrane perforation. Future clinical studies with a larger sample size are needed to compare the results obtained.

Background: SARS-CoV-2 reached Europe in early 2020 and disrupted the private and public life of its citizens, with potential implications for substance use. The objective of this study was to describe possible changes in substance use in the first months of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in Europe. Methods: Data were obtained from a cross-sectional online survey of 36,538 adult substance users from 21 European countries conducted between April 24 and July 22 of 2020. Self-perceived changes in substance use were measured by asking respondents whether their use had decreased (slightly or substantially), increased (slightly or substantially), or not changed during the past month. The survey covered alcohol (frequency, quantity, and heavy episodic drinking occasions), tobacco, cannabis, and other illicit drug use. Sample weighted data were descriptively analysed and compared across substances. Results: Across all countries, use of all substances remained unchanged for around half of the respondents, while the remainder reported either a decrease or increase in their substance use. For alcohol use, overall, a larger proportion of respondents indicated a decrease than those reporting an increase. In contrast, more respondents reported increases in their tobacco and cannabis use during the previous month compared to those reporting decreased use. No distinct direction of change was reported for other substance use. Conclusions: Our findings suggest changes in use of alcohol, tobacco and cannabis during the initial months of the pandemic in several European countries. This study offers initial insights into changes in substance use. Other data sources, such as sales statistics, should be used to corroborate these preliminary findings.

Background: It remains unclear whether alcohol use disorders (AUDs) can be characterized by specific levels of average daily alcohol consumption. The aim of the current study was to model the distributions of average daily alcohol consumption among those who consume alcohol and those with alcohol dependence, the most severe AUD, using various clustering techniques. Methods: Data from Wave 1 and Wave 2 of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions were used in the current analyses. Clustering algorithms were applied in order to group a set of data points that represent the average daily amount of alcohol consumed. Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs) were then used to estimate the likelihood of a data point belonging to one of the mixture distributions. Individuals were assigned to the clusters which had the highest posterior probabilities from the GMMs, and their treatment utilization rate was examined for each of the clusters. Results: Modeling alcohol consumption via clustering techniques was feasible. The clusters identified did not point to alcohol dependence as a separate cluster characterized by a higher level of alcohol consumption. Among both females and males with alcohol dependence, daily alcohol consumption was relatively low. Conclusions: Overall, we found little evidence for clusters of people with the same drinking distribution, which could be characterized as clinically relevant for people with alcohol use disorders as currently defined.

Background: The existing data demonstrate the potential role of trace elements in nasal mucociliary clearance, although the association between trace element and mineral status and ciliary function in children with chronic rhinosinusitis is insufficiently studied. Therefore, the objective of the present study is evaluation of trace element and mineral status and mucociliary function in pediatric CRS patients before and after functional endoscopic sinus surgery. Methods: The present study involved 30 children with chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyps. During this follow-up the patients were examined preoperatively (point 0), underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery, and were repeatedly examined at three months postoperatively (point 1). At both points the patients were subjected to quality-of-life assessment using SNOT-20 questionnaire; endoscopic and computer tomography examination of the nasal sinuses; evaluation of ciliary function and mucosal cytology using high-speed videomicroscopy; assessment of blood count and inflammatory markers; as well as analysis of trace element and mineral levels in whole blood, serum, and hair using inductively-coupled plasma mass-spectrometry. Results: The obtained data demonstrate that endoscopic sinus surgery significantly improved sinonasal pathology in children with chronic rhinosinusitis, as evidenced by significantly reduced Lund-Mackay, Lund-Kennedy, and SNOT-20 scores. At the same time, no significant improvement of ciliary functions or mucosal cytology was observed postoperatively. Trace element status assessment demonstrated that postoperative serum Zn, whole blood Mg and Cu were significantly lower as compared to preoperative values. In contrast, serum Mn and Cr, as well as whole blood Cr and hair Se were characterized by a significant increase at three months postoperatively. Multiple linear regression analysis demonstrated that serum Zn is significantly associated with the number of ciliated cells and cell viability, whereas serum Mn and whole blood Cu concentrations are inversely associated with cell viability and ciliary length, respectively. Hair Se was found to be associated with the number of neutrophils in the mucosa biopsy. Conclusion: Redistribution of trace elements and minerals may at least partially mediate prolonged recovery of mucosal ciliary function in children with chronic rhinosinusitis in three months after functional sinus surgery, although the particular mechanisms of these alterations in trace element levels are to be discovered.

Introduction: The claustrum is a structure involved in formation of several cortical and subcortical neural microcircuits which may be involved in such functions as conscious sensations and rewarding behavior. The claustrum is regarded as a multi-modal information processing network. Pathology of the claustrum is seen in certain neurological disorders. To date, there are not enough comprehensive studies that contain accurate information regarding involvement of the claustrum in development of neurological disorders. Objective: Our review aims to provide an update on claustrum anatomy, ontogenesis, cytoarchitecture, neural networks and their functional relation to the incidence of neurological diseases. Materials and methods: A literature review was conducted using the Google Scholar, PubMed, NCBI MedLine, and eLibrary databases. Results: Despite new methods that have made it possible to study the claustrum at the molecular, genetic and epigenetic levels, its functions and connectivity are still poorly understood. The anatomical location, relatively uniform cytoarchitecture, and vast network of connections suggest a divergent role of the claustrum in integration and processing of input information and formation of coherent perceptions. Several studies have shown changes in the appearance, structure and volume of the claustrum in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease (PD), Alzheimer’s disease (AD), autism, schizophrenia, and depressive disorders. Taking into account the structure, ontogenesis, and functions of the claustrum, this literature review offers insight into understanding the crucial role of this structure in brain function and behavior.
