© 2019 Elsevier GmbH We report a case of severe babesiosis caused by the bovine pathogen Babesia divergens with the development of multisystem failure in a splenic host. Immunosuppression other than splenectomy can also predispose people to B. divergens. There was heavy multiple invasion of up to 14 parasites inside the erythrocyte, which had not been previously observed even in asplenic hosts. The piroplasm 18S rRNA sequence from our patient was identical B. divergens EU lineage with identity 99.5–100%.

© 2019 Elsevier GmbH Here, we report the first confirmed autochthonous tick-borne encephalitis case diagnosed in Moscow in 2016 and describe the detection of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) in ticks and small mammals in a Moscow park. The paper includes data from two patients who were bitten by TBEV-infected ticks in Moscow city; one of these cases led to the development of the meningeal form of TBE. Both TBEV-infected ticks attacked patients in the same area. We collected ticks and trapped small mammals in this area in 2017. All samples were screened for the presence of pathogens causing tick-borne diseases by PCR. The TBEV-positive ticks and small mammals’ tissue samples were subjected to virus isolation. The sequencing of the complete polyprotein gene of the positive samples was performed. A total of 227 questing ticks were collected. TBEV was detected in five specimens of Ixodes ricinus. We trapped 44 small mammals, mainly bank voles (Myodes glareolus) and pygmy field mice (Apodemus uralensis). Two samples of brain tissue from bank voles yielded a positive signal in RT-PCR for TBEV. We obtained six virus isolates from the ticks and brain tissue of a bank vole. Complete genome sequencing showed that the obtained isolates belong to the European subtype and have low diversity with sequence identities as high as 99.9%. GPS tracking showed that the maximum distance between the exact locations where the TBEV-positive ticks were collected was 185 m. We assume that the forest park had been free of TBEV and that the virus was recently introduced.

© 2018 Elsevier B.V. Development of efficient biodegradable, environmentally responsive, biocompatible and non-toxic delivery system is needed for efficient gene delivery. As well known, properties of the vehicle are determined by the structure of carrier components. The aim of the current study was to estimate in vitro transfection efficacy of aliphatic di-, tri- and tetrapeptide-based cationic lipoplexes loaded with siRNA in function of a number of cationic groups using 2D (monolayer culture) and 3D (multicellular tumor spheroids) in vitro models. Physicochemical properties and cytotoxicity of the liposomes were found to be dependent upon a number of amino acid derivatives in an amphiphilic polar head. Uptake of liposomes loaded with nucleic acid (lipoplexes) and their localization in HEK293T cells was studied by confocal microscopy. The liposomes based on lipotripeptides had the highest transfection efficiency which was 20-fold higher than those fabricated from lipotetrapeptides.

The purpose of the study was to assess the impact of toothpastes containing hydroxyapatite and fluoride on enamel caries resistance and remineralization rate. Study groups comprised 160 patients divided in 2 groups of 80 patients: 40 - at the age of 15-17 and 40 at the age of 18-25 who have been using toothpastes with hydroxyapatite and fluoride during 1 year. The plaque determination was carried out with the use of OHI-S and Turesky indexes. Litmus test pieces were used to determine oral fluid pH. The clinical determination of enamel remineralization rate, dynamics of acid resistance of enamel were carried out. Oral hygiene at baseline examination was poor in both groups. After oral hygiene training, there was a tendency towards indexes decrease more pronounced in the 18-25 age group regardless of the composition of the toothpastes used. Mean baseline oral fluid pH in the observation group was 6.5±0.4, in the comparison group - 6.8±0.4. By the end of the trial there was a tendency towards the increase of the oral fluid pH, which were 7.3±0.3 and 7.7±0.3, respectively. The enamel acid resistance of the patients of the observation group was significantly higher (p>0.05) compared with the group of patients using fluoride toothpaste, as well as the proportion of patients in whom the enamel recovery occurred within 24 hours (47.5% vs. 22.5%, respectively).

The purpose of our study was to assess the efficiency of toothpaste 'Intensive strengthening of supersensitive teeth with nano-GAP' INNOVA and the suspension 'Liquid Enamel' INNOVA on the sensitivity of teeth with gingival recession. We examined 40 people aged 20-25 years. Each group consisted of 20 people: 10 women, 10 men. The first group (observations) used the paste and the suspension for 14 days, and the second group (comparisons) cleaned teeth only with a brush without a paste. Schiff aerial test was performed to assess the rate of hypersensitivity. As a result of the study, it was found that the combination of paste and liquid suspension with nano-hydroxyapatite for 14 days effectively reduced the hypersensitivity of the teeth with gingival recession that was shown by a statistically significant decrease in the Schiff index in the observation group. Thus, this combination is the method of choice in the treatment of hyperesthesia and can be used as an alternative substitute therapy.

According to current guidelines, non-sedative H1-antihistamines (nsAH) are the first-line therapy of chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU). But even up-dosed antihistamines (to four times the standard dose) produce symptom resolution in less than 50% of patients. Biomarkers that can predict the response to nsAH are still unknown. We carried out a prospective study and used discriminant analysis to evaluate the combination of D-dimer, fibrinogen, C-reac-
tive protein and ESR values for predicting the outcome of treatment with levocetirizine in 84 CSU patients. We found that elevation of these parameters is associated with more active disease, low quality of life and lack of response to standard doses of levocetirizine. Thus, eval-uation of these markers may be considered useful before starting treatment with nsAH. The mechanisms behind the increase in these parameters in CSU patients need to be elucidated in further studies.
