Despite some improvement in overall-(OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) following surgery and first-line chemotherapy, there is a need for development of novel and more effective therapeutic strategies. In this mini review, we provide a summary of the current landscape of the clinical use of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitors in ovarian cancer. Emerging data from phase I and II trials reveals that a combinatorial treatment that includes TKIs and chemotherapy agents seems promising in terms of PFS despite some adverse effects recorded; whereas the use of mTOR inhibitors seems less effective. There is a need for further research into the inhibition of multiple signaling pathways in ovarian cancer and progression to phase III trials for drugs that seem most promising.

© Bionika Media Ltd. Objective. To carry out a systems analysis of the data available in the current literature on the impact of vitamin D deficiency on the risk of endometriosis and reproductive cancer, as well as on the possibilities of vitamin D supplementation in order to treat and prevent these diseases. Material and methods. The review includes the data of foreign and Russian articles published in the past 10 years and found in Pubmed on this topic. Results. The paper describes the mechanisms by which vitamin D is involved in the processes of inflammation, immunomodulation, and proliferation, as well as the role of its deficiency in pathogenesis of pathological proliferation and inflammation in endometriosis, breast cancer, and ovarian cancer. It gives the data of clinical trials confirming the role of vitamin D deficiency in the progression and negative effects of endometriosis and carcinogenesis, the possibility of vitamin D supplementation for the prevention and adjunct therapy of reproductive cancer and endometriosis. Conclusion. It is necessary to conduct further studies to experimentally and clinically evaluate vitamin D deficiency in endometriosis and cancer. Currently, vitamin D supplements should be prescribed to patients with this pathology if they have been found to have a low blood level of 25(OH)D3.

Purpose: To analyze the data available in the modern scientific medical literature on contemporary aspects of the diagnosis, staging and differential treatment tactics in patients with epithelial ovarian cancer. Materials and methods: Research method used in this article is the systematic analysis of the medical literature, including Pubmed and ClinicalTrials.gov. Results: This article attempts to summarize the worldwide experience of modern medicine in management of epithelial ovarian cancer. The current version of the ovarian cancer classification is described. The possibilities of imaging techniques and their place in the staging are determined. The accurate criteria for tumor resectability assessment and the main treatment tactics are given in details. The possibilities of imaging methods in treatment control and monitoring treatment response are provided. The leading imaging modalities for recurrent disease evaluation are delineated. Conclusion: Ovarian cancer is a serious diagnostic challenge in terms of differential diagnosis, staging and selection of optimal treatment strategy. Proper use of visualization modalities allows better management of primary and recurrent ovarian cancer. Moreover, it is necessary to conduct further investigations aimed at developing well-defined diagnostic protocols in monitoring during treatment in order to obtain response evaluation with minimal time delay.
