SMOOTH HEART WORK UNIQUE SHUMAKOV-ZVEREV AORTIC CAGED BALL VALVE PROTHESIS

SMOOTH HEART WORK UNIQUE SHUMAKOV-ZVEREV AORTIC CAGED BALL VALVE PROTHESIS

Date. 1964.

Author. Valery I. Shumakov (1931–2008) – surgeon, transplantologist, Doctor of Medicine, Academician of Russian academy of Sciences.

Aims. Creating an improved variant of the caged ball valve prosthesis.

Tasks. Elimination of coronary circulation disorder danger caused by the prosthesis, prevention of thrombosis near the cage.

Methods. The cage of the ball was made of three bent not connected arches and the cone-like cuff was made of polytetrafluorethylene.

Stages of work and implementation.

V. I. Shumakov systemized the data on diameters of heart openings after removing natural valves.

Numbers, shown in his doctoral thesis, laid the foundation for determining sizes and forms of Russian caged-ball mechanic valve prosthetics. Shumakov-Zverev valve prosthesis came in four sizes.

Publications. Shumakov V. I. Prosthesis of heart valves. Abstract of the Doctoral thesis. Moscow, 1965. Zverev B. P., Shumakov V. I., Efremenkov A. A., and others. Caged-ball prosthesis of aortic valve. Inventor’s certificate № 169745, claimed 07.03.1964, published 17.03.1965. Bulletin of inventions. 1965, № 7.

Value.

The design of the prosthesis eliminated the danger of it interfering with the coronary blood-flow, prevented blood-clods on the cage, provided possibility for sterilization by boiling or in an autoclave without deformation of the cuff.
