Telecommunication technologies join together the world medical libraries

The Central Scientific Medical Library of Sechenov University with assistance of the Virtual Health Sciences Library of the Balearic Islands organized the video-conference "International Round-Table on Health Science Libraries: online or on paper?" on April 3, 2018.

The conference brought together representatives from the medical libraries of Spain, the UK, the Netherlands and the USA, as well as the heads of Moscow and regional university libraries.

Mr. Boris Loginov, Director of the Central Scientific Medical Library of Sechenov University, gave a keynote speech on “Resources and services of the Central National Medical Library as the largest medical library in Russia and Europe”. He focused on the digital subscription, which allows to provide online access to all documents of the Central National Medical Library, use of thesaurus MeSH for searching scientific medical literature in all languages. The technology has provoked interest as a perspective for informational cooperation between the world medical libraries.

Mr. Virgili Páez, head of the Virtual Health Sciences Library of the Balearic Islands, introduced the Bibliosalut project which provides the electronic resources and virtual services. The mission of the project is to provide access to scientific information from the world's databases to the Public Health professionals of Balearic Islands.

The promotion practices of library services through social networks, reliability of the scientific information, participation of libraries in the scientometric research activities, perspectives for connection libraries using telecommunication technologies were discussed during the video-conference.

Jonathan McFarland (Head of the Academic Writing Office, Sechenov University) in his closing remarks emphasized the necessity of cooperation between the Central National Medical Library, some other Russian and Spanish medical libraries of the Bibliosalut  project for improvement the quality of research and healthcare management.
