Preoperative anemia is common in clinical practice, particularly in women of reproductive age, and it worsens the outcomes of operative treatment. Red blood cell hemotransfusions can be used for management of anemia developing in the perioperative period, however, they have only a short-term effect and can lead to serious complications. Introduction of blood saving strategies can prevent the development and progression of perioperative anemia and hence avoid hemotransfusions. The review considers modern perioperative blood saving strategies based on recent guidelines of the European and American societies of anesthesiologists.
