‘Visit Malaysia Year 2014’ campaign started by the First Med Malaysian students

On Sunday, the 8th of December, an event called ‘Prelude to Malaysian Night’ was held at Open Art Café in Ulof Palme Street, Moscow. This event was organised by the Sechenov Malaysian Students Association (SMSA) committee members in collaboration with the Embassy of Malaysia and Tourism Malaysia.

This event was held to promote Malaysia and its culture to the Russian communities in Moscow, thus attracting more tourists to visit Malaysia. Besides, this prelude was held also as our initiative to raise fund and sponsors for our bigger event, which was planned to be held in spring 2014, ‘The Malaysian Night: One Malaysia, One World’.

Among VIP guests were His Excellency, Dato’ ZainolAbidin Omar, the ambassador of Malaysia to Russian Federation together with his wife Datin Rusamelia Ruslan, Prof. Oleg S. Glazachev, Dean of International Students, and Vice-Dean Petr Ivanov. They were greeted with dance performances by several groups of students of FMSMU, representing the three major ethnic in Malaysia, and also a special Bidayuh dance by one of the SMSA committee members, Esther.

Together with other guests they were given a chance to try on Malaysian traditional clothes prepared by the Tourism Malaysia including Malay bajukebaya and bajumelayu, and Chinese traditional clothes – Cheongsam and Sam fu. Guests were also entertained with traditional dishes. Nasilemak with chicken rendang, ‘pudingbuih’ and ‘air bandung’ were among the main dishes for the event. While the guest enjoying the taste of Malaysian cuisine, they were presented with a demonstration on how to make ‘roti canai’ and ‘tehtarik’.

The event then continued with speeches by Prof. Oleg S. Glazachev and Petr Ivanov who expressed their gratitude and appreciation towards the enthusiasm shown by the Malaysian students of FMSMU, not only in academic, but also in sports and other extracurricular activities. Last but not least, was the speech fr om His Excellency, Dato’ Zainol Abidin Omar, who thanked all the guests and students who participated in this event, and further invited the guests to come and visit Malaysia. Plaques of appreciation were given to the VIPs by the President of SMSA, Miss Ng Valynne.

Compilations of video from the tourism Malaysia were played to give impression to the guests about the environment and scenery in Malaysia. Once again, tehtarik demonstration was shown to the VIPs, followed by roti jala demonstration. All of the guests including our VIPs had an opportunity to try making their own roti jala. Dato’ Zainol Abidin Omar and his wife taught Prof. Oleg Glazachev and Petr Ivanov on how to play a malay traditional game called ‘Congkak’.

The event continued till early in the morning. We are proud that it was a success despite the lim ited space and time given to prepare beforehand, and helped promoting Malaysia to the people in Moscow. We are looking forward to organising a similar event in a larger scale, to further introduce our culture globally.
