MALAYSIAN CULTURAL SPRING FESTIVAL 2014On the 18th of May 2014, the Outgoing Committee of SMSA 2013/2014 organised the first Interbatch Games cum Cultural Event catering to both the Russian and Malaysian students of First MSMU, held at the University’s Burevestnik Stadium at Metro Frunzenskaya.

The day started bright and early at 9 am on a sunny Sunday with registration of the students. A total of 200 students, 36 teams played a total of 50 games in Futsal, Volleyball, Table Tennis, and Frisbee.

The event started at 10 am with all the student batches from the 1st to the 6th years marching onto the field for the opening ceremony, greeted by a take on Indian dance prepared by students of the Phoenix Sports Club.

At approximately 10.30 am, the Interbatch Games kicked off with the Futsal (F) category and Frisbee (M) matches. Even at the start of the games, students cheered and jeered as they watched the epic unravelling at student athleticism and sportsmanship. The day gradually turned hot, but even so, all the students sat blazing the scorching heat watching and participating in the games, carnival fun of face painting and eating.

Field sports were fortunately not all the fun lined up for the participants of the event. The organisers even held a carnival games that were open for registration per a team of 5, regardless of their academic years. In these games, you could clearly see the Malaysian spirit as students from the 1st year joined with their close friends of the senior years, soaking up the fun in games like Blow-Pop Balloon, Sack Run, Hanging Apples, and Tripod Running. The carnival games started at 4.30 pm, with the Finals set for an hour after.

At around 6 pm, all the games came to an end with the arrival of the VIPs, the Ambassador of Malaysia to the Russian Federation, Dato’ Zainol Abidin Omar and his wife, Professor Oleg Glazachev, Dean for International students FMSMU, Director of Tourism Malaysia, Madam Noridah Kamaruddin, First Secretary Madam Fauzana, and Director of ASEAN Center MGIMO, Dr Victor Sumsky.

Closing Ceremony and Prize-giving Ceremony were conducted by the emcees of the day, Bhavanee Arvinna and Wee Shea Ann. The students were marched into the field by contingents. After welcoming speeches and words of wisdom passed by Prof Glazachev, Dato’ Zainol, and President of Sechenov Malaysian Students Association, Ng Valynne, the students were treated to a reimagined fusion dance of the Barata Natyam and Kolattam, an Orang Ulu dance, and interesting performances by the Phoenix Sports Club.

The Prize-giving ceremony awarded a total of 21 medals of Gold, Silver and Bronze, to participating teams of Futsal (M), Futsal (M), Volleyball (Mixed), Frisbee (M), Frisbee(F), and Table Tennis (Mixed), and hampers to the winners of the Carnival Games. The Interbatch Games Trophy Cup was taken home by the 4th year students who collected a total of 3 Golds in Frisbee (F), Futsal (F), and Futsal (M) and 3 Bronzes in Volleyball, Table Tennis and Frisbee (M).

Next, was the Handover Ceremony. This event marked an end of a very fruitful and successful term of service for the SMSA Committee 2013/2014. As the committee members took their last bow of their service, a new committee will bear the torch, providing endless dedication and hardwork, to service the needs and welfare of the students. We welcome you, New SMSA Committee of 2014/2015.

The event drew to an end, with the releasing of 30 Sky Lanterns, symbolising good fortune, health, wealth, celebrations, love and friendship. A perfect summation to the Malaysian Spring Cultural Festival 2014.

We hope that the event remains a highlight in the memories of everyone who participated in it.
