Choice of Medical Specialty: Obstetrics & Gynecology Case Example

Can't choose the specialty? Time for decision is running out...
Follow us! Today we are talking about Obstetrics and Gynecology!
Our thanks to Lydia Klyukina (1st year resident, Obstetrics & Gynecology) for this interview.

- Tell us, please, where do you study and why did you choose this particular direction? What does differ your specialty and what faculty did you graduate from?
- Hi, I graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of our university. I was always interested in specialties related to surgery, but among a huge variety I wanted to find something that suits only for me. Eventually, it turns out to be Obstetrics and Gynecology, which combines not only surgery, but also various aspects of other specialties. Almost all pathologies can somehow affect both the reproductive health of the woman herself and the formation of her baby.

- What or who influenced your choice?
- My choice was influenced by the duty in the emergency gynecology department, where I was fortunate enough to get on the 3rd course. After attending the School of Excellence “endocrinopathy in obstetrics and gynecology” at our department I had no further doubts. There we were shown that: “In addition to the surgical basis, obstetrics and gynecology includes a part of every medical specialty. Everything is important when we’re talking about woman’ reproductive system. Any malfunction can be crucial”.

- Tell us about the preparation for accreditation and stages of enrollment.
- We prepared for accreditation together with the fellow student, two months turned out to be enough for us. We divided all the tasks and we studied every day, solved tests and tasks and polished up our practical skills. As a result everything went well! The process of enrollment or rather the process of waiting for the cherished lists, turned out to be the most difficult and long. This year everything was strict: main aspect were the score for the 1st stage of accreditation, the presence of work experience of 9 months, schooling in the School of Excellence, scientific work and participation in volunteer activities.

- How does the typical day of the intern looks like?
- The working day starts at 8.30 am: the morning conference, a duty report, a discussion of current plans, a general patient’s round and an examination of newcomers with making a treatment plan. After round we can go to the operating room and then - prepare all the documentation and adjust the assignments. We have a five-day working week and daily duty. At university department we are taking lectures on obstetrics.

- What tips or lifehacks can you give?
- It is very important to find something of your own. Something that suits your character and excites you. You definitely must not make a choice based on fashion and profit, it is important to know what you want. If you listen to your heart then you will surely be able to find your way. And the rest will follow. “Never be afraid to try something new. Remember that a lone amateur built the Ark. A large group of professionals built the Titanic.”
We are surrounded by various opportunities, appreciate every minute of your time and use every moment to learn something new. Believe in your dream and work every day. And most importantly, support and help each other, because a double victory is even more pleasant!
