UNIQUE NEUROSURGICAL INSTRUMENT. DIAKONOV’S CRANIOTOMY ANGLED CHISEL.

Author. Petr I. Diakonov (1855–1908) – surgeon, Doctor of Medicine, Professor of Emperor Moscow University, Medical Department.

Aims. To find a new way to open up a skull.

Tasks. To simplify instruments for opening the cranial cavity.

Structure and principles of working. Cutting feature of a chisel is used. The chisel was put closely onto the bone at an acute angle, and its handle was hit with a wooden or a metal hammer.

Implementation. Diakonov’s chisel was produced on the plant of “F. Shvabe”. The chisel was used in craniotomies.

Value.

Diakonov’s chisel was a simple and accessible instrument and was used for craniotomies for a long time.

With the gradual development of cranial operations doctors stopped using chisels for trepanations.
