Sechenov University urology experts present pioneering laser research at AUA Congress
The annual Congress of the American Urological Association (AUA) is one of the world’s most prestigious forums in urology, bringing together leading researchers, clinicians, and top medical technology manufacturers from across the globe. This year, Sechenov University was represented by Professor Alim Dymov – a faculty member of the Institute of Urology and Human Reproductive Health and Head of the Center for Laser Urology.
Urologists at Sechenov University were among the first in the world to introduce thulium fiber lasers into surgical practice, specifically the Russian-made laser systems developed by VPG LaserONE (NTI “IRE‑Polus”). These lasers are now commonly used in endoscopic procedures for urolithiasis and benign prostatic hyperplasia.
“Thanks to our unique clinical experience, we were invited by the manufacturer to take part in a multicentre study,” explains Professor Dymov. “The aim was to evaluate the enhanced capabilities of the latest‑generation thulium fiber laser.”
In his video presentation, the Sechenov expert reported the results of a multicentre trial conducted at several leading urological clinics in Moscow. “The new laser modification features a unique ‘stone‑tissue’ identification system – a so‑called tissue sensor,” Dymov noted. “This option reduces the risk of inadvertent damage to healthy tissues by enabling rapid differentiation of tissue types. It significantly improves both the efficacy and safety of laser lithotripsy, particularly in complex clinical scenarios. Currently, this technology has no analogues worldwide.”
The presentation was recognised as the best in the Endourology section. Professor Dymov emphasised that this high appraisal represents international recognition of Russian scientific achievements and will serve as a great encouragement for the further advancement of urology in Russia.
