Sechenov University presents unique and innovative solutions to international experts On 24 October, Council members of the 5-100 Russian Academic Excellence Project visited key innovation platforms of Sechenov University, where a presentation of advanced scientific developments and projects, created in the University within the Project 5-100, was held. 

The expert panel includes Russian and foreign representatives of the academic community and internationally recognised experts and researchers of higher education, including Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation Marina Borovskaya; Scientific Director of the Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO, Deputy Chairman of the Council of the Project 5-100, Andrei Volkov; Ex-Vice President of Resource Development, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, member of the International Advisory Council of Sechenov University, Jeffrey Newton; Director of the Department of Pathophysiology and Allergy Research, Medical University of Vienna, Austria, member of the International Advisory Council of Sechenov University Rudolf Valenta; member of the Council of the Project 5-100, Chancellor of the University of York, Malcolm Grant. The main purpose of the visit of the international expert panel was to familiarise themselves with the development strategy of the University and its successful transformation into a world-class research university focused on improving global competitiveness. 

During the visit, the Rector of Sechenov University Petr Glybochko stressed that the University is the only medical school in the structure of Global Universities, which participates in the Project 5-100 and fights for international competitiveness. During the four years of participation in the Project, it has transformed into a university of life sciences. The key vector of transformation was the development of interdisciplinary, personalised, high-tech and information competencies in medicine and science. 

The University has established strategic development institutes that implement global international projects. Sechenov University scientists have won international recognition in the field of bioengineering, biomaterials and digital medicine. All this made it possible to make a qualitative leap into the field of medical education and create a new model of medicine of the future. 

During the visit, the participants of the event got acquainted with the research potential of the institutes of the Biomedical Science and Technology Park of Sechenov University: the Institute of Regenerative Medicine, Institute of Bionic Technologies and Engineering, Institute of Molecular Medicine, Institute of Personalised Medicine, Institute of Translational Medicine and Biotechnology, and also visited the unique Institute of Medical E-Learning. 

"Thanks to the innovative developments of the Biomedical Science and Technology Park, presented today to the members of the International Advisory Council, Sechenov University will be able to not only take key positions in the field of biomedical research among domestic technological leaders, but also become part of the global market of educational services and research programmes. The close complex connection of science, practice, education and business allows us to create products and technologies of a fundamentally new generation," said Petr Glybochko

Following the meeting, Malcolm Grant, member of the Council of the Project 5-100, Chancellor of University of York, noted the significant progress of Sechenov University: "I'm impressed by the new laboratories of Sechenov University. This is the beginning of a new research era. Sechenov University showed notable progress in the first three years of the 5-100 Project. It's necessary to use these investments to promote medical research throughout Russia, for the benefit of Russia. 

Medicine is one of the most important scientific areas in the world, and it's highly important that Russia supports and increases its contribution to the global knowledge and understanding of medical issues." At the end of the visit to Sechenov University, members of the 5-100 took part in a Strategic Session at the Russian White House under the leadership of Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. 

During the meeting, the progress of the Russian Academic Excellence Project was discussed. The meeting of the Council of the Project 5-100 will be held in Moscow on 25-26 October. The experts will review the reports of the universities participating in the 5-100 Project on the implementation of their action plans as part of the programmes to improve competitiveness. Sechenov University will present reports and an action plan for the development of innovative programmes and projects on 26 October 2019.
